Although the phrase "Knowledge is power" is usually attributed to Thomas Jefferson, the original author was probably Renaissance figure Francis Bacon who is thought to have written sometime in the late 1590s in Latin "ipsa scientia potestas est" (translated from Latin to English: 'knolwedge itself is power'). Some people feel that the phrase means that knowledge is greater than physical prowess, more valuable than money, and even more important than social networks. To truly understand this, an individual must think of the different ways that knowledge can be used to improve one's understanding about the world and help him or her achieve goals, outcompete opponents, or attain the impossible. One way to emphasis the importance of knowledge is to recognize that others may not provide you with the knowledge you seek, limit the knowledge that you have access to, or exert their opinion as fact. This is called bias. A person who recognizes that knowledge is power also is aware that bias generally occurs in the news. After reviewing this week's sources about media bias, think about a time where you feel bias impacted your quest for knowledge. For this week's journal, summarize what bias is and explain why bias is included in the news and how we can recognize bias.
